The Day Our Lives Changed Forever!

We finally got our little boy on March 6, 2008. It was that morning, Russ and I prepared for another day at work. We both woke up feeling completely refreshed and ready for another day with the federal government. I had just slept through the entire night (something that I hadn’t done for a while) and felt fantastic. Russ asked the big question... “Are we having a baby today?" and I said “No, I feel way too good to be having a baby today, besides we're not due until the 15th”. We both went about our morning routine, and started to gather the garbage throughout the house (it was garbage day). As I bent over to pick up the kitchen garbage, I felt a small pop and then I had a strange feeling I was going to wet my pants. I quickly ran to the bathroom and sat there wondering what was going on. In the meantime Russ was outside waiting for me in the car. After a minute of so, he came in and asked if everything was okay. My answer was “I think my water just broke”. Well if you know Russ you can imagine what happend next. He immediately started pacing the floor. I quickly called my Mom to ask her what it felt like to have your “water break”. She couldn’t tell me because her water never broke on her own, she always had it broke for her. She asked if I was in pain, and I said “no - I feel great”. She advised us to go to the hospital and get checked out, so we did. I jumped in the driver seat of the car because 1. I felt good to drive and 2. I knew I would get us to the right place. (Side Note: for years Russ always thought the middle school was the hospital – scary huh!) Once we were in the car there was a little excitement between the two of us along with a bit of nervousness. Is today the day we get our little boy, or is this just a false alarm? All of a sudden, my first pain hit right as we were stopped at a red light; I thought the light would never turn green! We finally made it to the hospital around 8:00 am and sure enough the nurse told us we were in labor and it looked like we were going to have our baby today.

My labor and delivery was nothing like I had imagined it to be. It was so laid back and enjoyable for the most part. From the moment we arrived at the hospital, everything moved very quickly until I received the epidural. That’s when things slowed way down! After several attempts of pushing, nothing ever progressed. Our “little man” was stuck! I was told that a caesarian would be the next option if I couldn’t push him out. I knew I could push this baby out and told the professionals to give me one more try. With the help of some enormous salad tongs and a lot of pushing and pulling, our little boy finally arrived. Thank you Dr. Greenwood and nurses...you were wonderful. It wasn't until 6:22 that night that we finally got our baby. The moment I held my “little man” and looked at him for the very first time was the best feeling I've ever had.

5 lbs. 13 oz. 19 inches long.

The first time we held our "little man".

I am so lucky to have Dr. Greenwood as my doctor. He's the best!
